Bloomberg Editor, National Press Club President John Hughes to Address PRSA-NCC’s Annual Thoth Gala

September 1, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Sept. 1, 2015 – Bloomberg’s John Hughes, president of the National Press Club (NPC), will serve as keynote speaker at the 47th Annual Thoth Awards Gala, September 16, the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America announced today. Tickets are available at

Hughes is an editor for Bloomberg First Word, the breaking news desk in Washington. In December 2014, he became the 108th president of NPC, the world’s leading professional organization for journalists. He is able to work from his office at the Club, where Bloomberg installed monitors and equipment for him to carry out his editing duties.

“I am honored and grateful to be asked to speak to such a distinguished group as PRSA-NCC,” said Hughes. “I look forward to attending this prestigious event and re-connecting with many individuals I have worked with as a newsman for nearly three decades. I also look forward to a discussion of the 21st century nexus between news and PR.”

Each year, PRSA-NCC recognizes outstanding public relations campaigns in the capital area with the Thoth Awards. The awards recognize the most outstanding, strategic public relations programs and products developed and produced in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area in 35 categories.

The awards are named after Thoth (pronounced “tot”), an Egyptian god of wisdom who was a mediator and scribe and credited as the inventor of communications and writing. In the spirit of Thoth, PRSA-NCC honors area PR professionals for their wisdom and contributions to the profession.

“On behalf of the Chapter and everyone associated with our industry, we are grateful that John Hughes accepted our invitation to keynote our premier event,” said Mitch Marovitz, president of PRSA-NCC. “John is a committed professional and accomplished journalist in every sense. In addition to celebrating award winners in communications, I encourage public relations professionals on all levels to attend and learn first-hand from John. It will be a valuable and timely opportunity to hear John talk about what network editors are looking for in terms of effective news gathering on a day-to-day basis as well as the evolving relationship between journalists and PR professionals.”

Prior to becoming an editor at Bloomberg, Hughes was the news organization’s aviation and transportation reporter for more than a decade. He joined Bloomberg in 2000 and previously worked for The Associated Press in Detroit and Washington, and at the Small Newspaper Group’s Washington bureau.

A native of Minnesota, Hughes started his career there, working for the St. Cloud Times and the Rochester Post-Bulletin. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, and a master’s from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Evanston, Ill.

At the Gala, the Chapter will induct Debra Silimeo, Robert Mathias and Don McLearn into the National Capital Public Relations Hall of Fame. Silimeo is executive vice president of Hager Sharp. Mathias, Ogilvy Washington’s longtime president, is now North America CEO of Ogilvy Public Relations. McLean, retired, had a 30-year career that included more than 17 years as deputy associate commissioner for public affairs at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
