An often-overlooked solution to this problem is our oceans. A fully productive ocean could provide one nutritious meal a day for 700 million people, or 13% to 15% of the animal protein produced on the entire planet. Moreover, wild-caught ocean fish uses no land, needs negligible amounts of water, is the lowest cost per pound to obtain, and provides human health benefits.
Unfortunately, ocean productivity is drastically declining due to overfishing, destructive fishing practices, marine habitat loss and pollution. If action is not taken to reverse this trend now, wild seafood may soon disappear as a major food source for a hungry planet. There is good news, however: restoring wild seafood is achievable and there are many examples of fish rebounding under science-based management. Science gives us clear direction about how to manage fish recovery. Fish will recover if we –
- Set reasonable fishing quotas and reduce industrial overfishing;
- Reduce bycatch (the incidental catch of non-targeted fish and ocean wildlife); and
- Protect marine habitat, both in preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health, as well as from the harmful effects of marine pollution.

In the United States, Oceana’s campaigns include reducing plastics pollution, stopping the expansion of dirty and dangerous offshore drilling, increasing transparency at sea, promoting responsible fishing practices, and helping to protect sharks, whales and other marine animals.
The communications manager reports to Oceana’s senior director of communications and is a member of the U.S. communications team. The communications manager is responsible for leading public relations efforts surrounding Oceana’s campaign to stop the expansion of dirty and dangerous offshore drilling activities in the United States, including seismic airgun blasting. In addition to securing quality news coverage about the campaign, the communications manager assists with all forms of communication and outreach related to targeted audiences (e.g. media, elected officials and supporters), including reports, brochures and fact sheets.
The communications manager also works closely with Oceana’s in-house multimedia team and outside consultants to create materials for the organization’s target audiences. This position is also responsible for providing writing and editing support to the campaign as needed, including drafting opinion pieces, press materials and other documents.
Additionally, the communications manager works with the campaign team, communications staff and Oceana’s marketing department to develop social media strategies that expand the visibility of Oceana’s U.S. campaigns in new and existing social media channels.
Candidates must thrive in a fast-pace environment that requires quick decision-making under pressure and strong multi-tasking skills.
Limited domestic travel might be required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the day-to-day communications lead for Oceana’s offshore drilling campaign
- Develop and execute communications strategies for Oceana’s campaign, managing initiatives through research, planning, implementation and evaluation
- Cultivate and manage successful relationships with key journalists, partners, vendors and other stakeholders
- Secure placements for Oceana’s campaign in top local, regional and national media outlets, including tracking press coverage and meeting specific goals
- Orchestrate, manage and execute successful media tours and strategic events for Oceana’s campaign
- Conceptualize, develop and manage production of high-level strategic materials for Oceana’s campaign, ranging from communications plans and press releases to reports and advertising campaigns
- Assist in the development, design and production of reports and other materials, working closely with the campaign team, communications staff and outside vendors
- Manage outside vendor agreements for Oceana’s campaign with the legal department
- Provide writing and editing support to Oceana’s campaign as needed
- Find opportunities to spread the messages of Oceana’s campaign through traditional and online media sources such as letters-to-the-editor, op-eds and blog posts. Efforts include drafting, editing and placing opinion pieces
- Work with Oceana’s marketing team to develop a stronger voice for the campaign across social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
- Secure speaking engagements for Oceana’s campaign experts
- Assist with other U.S. communications activities as needed
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related field
- Three to five years of public relations experience, with expertise in media relations, including pitching and writing for the media
Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong journalistic writing skills with excellent knowledge and use of the Associated Press Stylebook guidelines
- Superb writing, editing and verbal communication skills adaptable to a variety of audiences
- Superior attention to detail and organizational skills
- In-depth knowledge and use of social media tools, networks and online communities
- Ability to synthesize complicated scientific jargon quickly and accurately for lay audiences
